Of #3 and Confinement

So recently, we welcomed the arrival of our #3 via natural birth after a relatively short 4-hour labour.

I wouldn't say it was any easier, even though my grandma says the babies are supposed to come flying out like laying eggs as we go along lol. The pain is still as real as it gets and at one point in time, I was seriously considering epidural because the contractions were coming too quickly and my dilation was coming too slowly!

Since I got poisoned into Jujube late last year, I have the cutest maternity bag with me!

The day started with an appointment with my gynae, I was already 39 weeks by then but there wasn't any signs of labour yet. Baby's head was not low enough, cervix not dilated. It was likely that I would not go into labour for the entire week.

My gynae then suggested me getting induced because he was worried that Baby may gain more weight towards Week 40 and labour may be harder for me. On the other hand, I was worried about getting induced because:

1) On circumstances where the induction causes fetal distress, it will lead to emergency c-section. I am afraid of c-sec, to be honest. (This is largely from the use of Prostaglandins)

2) There is a chance of amniotic fluid embolism, which is basically amniotic fluid flowing into the mother's blood stream - it is a risky complication that can be fatal.

3) Labour takes longer hours and contraction pains will be more severe.

After much deliberation, Nian and I decided that I should be induced. I was given the option to wait until Week 40, but by then, if I don't go into labour naturally, induction is unavoidable.

I was kinda hoping to carry #3 until a maximum of 41 weeks, but my gynae advised otherwise. He was also very helpful in ensuring my questions and concerns are addressed. Thankfully, I was successfully induced drug-free, without the use of Prostaglandins nor oxytocin. Instead, he used the stretch and sweep method, which worked really well for me because within half an hour, I was slowly experiencing contractions.

Guess who's who?
Got admitted into the hospital and before I know it, the little one is out!

Dylan and Alexis came to visit the next day, but because I just gave birth and was not allowed to carry anything heavy, I wasn't able to carry Alexis. The two kids spent two days with my mother-in-law while I was recuperating in the hospital and by the time I got back, Alexis doesn't seem to "want me" anymore. :(

She used to be very clingy towards me, even on the day I went on labour. I don't know what caused this sudden change - is it because she knows that she has a younger sibling that I have to care for more? Or is it because I don't get to spend enough time with her alone anymore?

When she comes back from school now, she no longer calls out to me. She calls out to her Nai Nai. When Nian was going to bring them out, she wanted to help her grandmother take her shoes, so that Grandma can go with them. Mama is non-existent to her at the moment now, which makes me so sad!

Everyone told me that it is just a phase and she will eventually come around and come back to me (God, I sound like an ex-girlfriend lol) and that I shouldn't worry too much. Sigh, thankfully, Dylan is older and more understanding. He still loves me and would shower me with hugs and kisses, but he is closer to his father now. Not sure if it is the hormones at work, I can't help but to feel a little sad. Like they are somewhat detached from me.

Anyway, back to happier things! I had a slightly different kind of bouquet this year from the family! My personal favourite is still the rainbow roses, that's for sure, but I like this Hello Kitty one as well because Dylan specifically mentioned that he had bought them for me. :)

On Confinement

Confinement has been a blast so far also, because my mother-in-law is finally able to help me with it and she is seriously one of the best cooks IN THE WORLD.

My first confinement was a nightmare - there was a water leak episode that had us cleaning up over 10 pails of water seeping out from our master bedroom wall. Building Service Center had no idea where the leak was, and proceeded to hack off the walls of half of our apartment. We already moved in by then so the clean-up was disastrous! Dylan and I had to move to my mother-in-law's house for two weeks while BSC sorted out this nonsense.

And if that wasn't enough, my confinement nanny went away just two weeks into my confinement.

My second confinement was definitely less dramatic as compared to the first, but it wasn't spectacular either. I engaged Natal Essentials for my confinement tingkat meals and it was lacklustre for the $1500 I paid. But hey! At least I have a proper roof over my head, and nobody is tearing my house down anymore.

So this third confinement is easily the winner. I had lots of chances to rest because both kids are in the childcare. On weekends, I have an additional pair of hands to help, so I wasn't starved on my rest. I got my necessary naps and lie-downs. Most importantly, I had fresh, good quality food that is piping hot on the table every. single. meal!

My talented mother-in-law also took pride that she ensured that the food had so much variety, they barely repeated unless requested!

Here are some of my favourites that she has done up so far:

Simmered with loads of DOM!
I actually tried to rank them according to what I like most, but I kinda gave up because I really cannot decide which ones I like MORE. I LOVE all of them!

Can you believe she did all these confinement-style? If we start a tingkat business with her cooking we would be millionaires.

She also made me Chicken Chop for one of the dinners because she said that "every day eat rice also sian". CHICKEN CHOP CONFINEMENT STYLE, ladies and gentlemen, can we give my mother-in-law a round of applause please.

And true to her Cantonese roots, I also had 3 days of amazing Vinegar Pig Trotters for my confinement. It was SO GOOD, I wanted more even though I had it for 3 days straight.

I didn't manage to take pictures of these delicacies the last time, but don't worry. I have already requested her to make it again sometime next week! Nian, Dylan and Alexis are also growing nice and well because of my mother-in-law's delicious and nutritional meals every day. We're definitely gonna miss her cooking when she goes back home after my confinement. :(

So.. yup! We are a family of five now, and we are so happy and thankful. The days do get busier and more hectic, but like what they always say, "The days are long, but the years are short".

I am sure I will miss all these when I look back in time. :)

Blog Train: Here's What I Do Every Week, Really

Ever since I became a mother 4 years ago, my life changed in ways I couldn't imagine. Long story short, everythingchanged. From a twenty-something PMEB who was working up the corporate ladder, I left my job, became a mumpreneur and a full-time caretaker for my three kiddos.

Being a mumpreneur has its perks - I get flexi work hours, I don't have to explain to anyone why I need the morning off , I can bring my kids to work and I continue to earn a living so that I won't have to live off my husband and add on to his financial burden.

Of course, having flexi work hours also meant that sometimes I would need to work at 10PM all the way to the wee hours, because that is when the household is finally quiet and I can get some work (or blogging this post) done.

4 days work week

Weekdays
I work 4 out of 7 days, and each of these days I spend about 4 to 5 hours at my work place. I schedule my work in the late afternoons on weekdays, so mornings are generally quite idle and relaxing.

We would have breakfast together as a family, pack the kids' school bags and then send them to school. Before #3 came along, the husband and I will then take the morning to run errands, followed by a quiet lunch together, then head off to work.

Weekends
On weekends, life is a little bit more hectic because on Saturdays, the kids will have to go on half-day childcare while we work in the mornings. #3 will go to work with me. By 12.30PM, I will run back from work, bring the older kids home and prepare them for their naps. They would usually sleep for about 1.5 hours to 2 hours, where I would catch a breather myself and have lunch.

Thankfully, my MIL helps me with Sunday mornings now. In the past, I would bring both kids to work on Sunday mornings, and it can get quite frustrating because sometimes, I really need to get some work done but somehow, kids seem to know when to want your attention when you're the busiest?

So for Sundays, I would wake up early, prepare breakfast for the kids, pack my work bag and diaper bag for #3. As soon as my MIL arrives, I will rush out of the house and I will work for another half day before coming back at about 12PM to take over from my mother-in-law, who would by then be exhausted from the active kiddos.

My MIL would have given them their lunch, so when I get back, I will prepare them for their nap times. When they nap, my tuition kid will come over for her Math tuition. I've been teaching her since Primary 3 and she is already Sec 4 now!

So even though I no longer actively give tuition, I still can't bear to stop hers until she finishes her O Levels. I can't believe she has been with me for 8 years!

The kids would have waken up by the time tuition class ends, so I will give them their snacks for tea time and by 4PM, Nian would be back from work. That is when we will go out for family outings, or just somewhere nearby for walks and dinner. It is my favourite time of the weekend because we can finally heave a sigh of relief that our "peak period" is over!

Family outing to Gardens By The Bay!

Back to the weekdays, I would work until about 6.15pm, then rush off from work so that I can be in time to pick the kids up before their childcare center closes at 7pm. Usually, I will reach them at about 6.45pm (thank God for working near home!), then I will prepare dinner for them. Between this half-an-hour, I will let the kids play in their toy room.

Picking them up from their school

Dinner will be served at about 7.15PM, where I would spend time talking to the kiddos, catch up on their day in the childcare center etc. Dylan is turning 4 this year so he is starting to be able to relate the happenings in school to me. It's really interesting listening to him because he would tell me which boys were naughty, and if his teacher scolded him because he misbehaved, whether he slept well in school...

Playing with play doughs on a regular week night!

We usually finish our dinner by 8PM. I will let them rest for a while, play a little bit of toys, read some books, do some colourings and at 8.30PM, I would shower the two older kids together.. and sneak in a quick shower myself.

Alexis goes to bed at 8.45PM, while Dylan's bed time is an hour later. So for this hour, I would usually let him watch an episode of his favourite Mickey Mouse Clubhouse while I put Alexis to bed. At the same time, if I would need to nurse #3, I would do it simultaneously.

9.15PM: Alexis would be fast asleep if we are lucky. Sometimes, she doesn't sleep even by 9.30PM, which is Dylan's bedtime. This is when I start to evolve into a monster-mummy.

10PM: All three kiddos would be fast asleep and I can catch up on some work, or stream a movie or watch Running Man with loads of tidbits with the husband. This is our quality time together and is a time that I look forward to every day. :)

We will usually head to bed by 11PM or midnight. I don't usually sleep much at night because I would wake up every two to three hours to nurse #3. Sometimes, the older kids will get nightmares, and will wake up crying. Nian will then be "activated" to soothe the crying child.

This is also why we really appreciate having mornings off because most of the time, at 7AM when the kids start running into our bedroom, we have barely rested. On difficult days, we would send the kids to childcare and then come back home to catch up on our sleep too!

On non-working days

Each week, there will be three special days where I don't go down to my work place, so I spend my time on various things, but mostly on housework and my hobbies.

I am blessed with a very capable part-time helper, so on one of these non-working days, she will come by and while she changes the bedsheets, cleans down the house, vacuums and mops the floor and washes the toilets, I will tag team with her to complete the laundry.

House cleaning days have the heaviest laundry loads because we would be washing two loads of bedsheets, the usual daily load of clothes and sometimes an additional load of curtains or sofa covers.

The two other days I would have the luxury of time to prepare dinner for the kids, and if I am fast enough, I get to do fun things like scrapbooking and busy bags making. I am hoping to pick up crochet next because those crochet dolls are so damn cute?!

Our Taipei-Hong Kong Trip Scrapbook that I have recently completed
I also like to busy myself making bento-boxes for my husband to bring to work on my non-working days.

Being a blogging mom

I was a blogger even before I became a mom. Blogging has been a part of me for almost 10 years and it has played a significant role in helping me keep track of memories. My blog has seen me through ex-boyfriends, my heartaches, life in Polytechnic and University, work, marriage and now being a parent.

I like blogging because I not only get the opportunity to share my experience (be it parenting experience, a new indoor playground or just life hacks) with like-minded parents, I get the chance to pen down these happenings. It works like a diary for me too. I don't like to put too much stress on blogging, hence, I will only update as and when I am free or inspired. Blogging shouldn't be an obligation, it should be a hobby!

This post is part of a blog train hosted by Singapore Parent Bloggers and everyday throughout the month of April, you will get to peek into the life of a mummy or daddy blogger.

April 21st takes us to a Week in a Life over at Owls Well, where the resident mummy blogger, Debs G, will share with us how she finds the time to write! Debs G is a Sunda Scops Owl who married a nice British Barn Owl and is raising a trio of hungry young owlets in a highrise tree in Singapore. Debs is a trained medical professional who is currently training to be A Parent. Debs also blogs about her adventures abroad at Owl Fly Away. She also hopes to one day own a small wrinkly dog called 'Bastille'.

#3's Maternity Shoot

I cannot believe this is my third maternity shoot already! This maternity shoot is a really memorable one because I actually miscalculated my gestation period, so I booked our photoshoot on my 39th week, thinking that it was my 37th!

And immediately the next day after our shoot, I went into labour and gave birth to K. What are the odds right? I could have gone into labour the day before or on the day itself but thankfully, it was the next day. *phew!*

After trying out different styles of shoot for Dylan and Alexis, I decided that simple is still the way to go for our family, so we went back to a clean and neat studio shoot that took us less than 2 hours to complete.

Back in 2012, when I was pregnant with Dy
2014, when I was pregnant with Alexis

Our family had the opportunity to work with Zul from Studio @ Horizon this time in his very intimate and cosy studio. When it comes to photoshoot, I really like to have them in the comfort of a studio, where it is air-conditioned, has toilets and not only we are comfortable, our photographer is comfy too.

I have seen very nice pictures of outdoor shoots but having done a couple of them myself, the trouble of sitting/lying down on the ground and pretending to be very comfortable, constantly needing to touch up my make-up because of the sweltering heat, needing to look for a toilet for outfit changes etc., I would very much prefer staying indoors, thankyouverymuch.

Besides, I really love the clean white backgrounds studio shoots give!

This picture is a little overly edited (check out how white my teeth is!), but don't you think Nian looks so much more mature now as compared to 4 years ago? I like how age has made him even more attractive than before.

It was really hard when it came to the shoots incorporating D and A because they really couldn't sit still! This was Alexis trying to walk towards our photographer and Nian was trying to pose/smile and pull her back at the same time LOL.

And then we had to bribe the little girl with biscuits so that she would sit still to take a photo with me! This was the best photo that she wasn't all blur (because she was running everywhere!), you can see that biscuit in her mouth, can't you? Hehe

Black and white pictures have a certain "feel" about it... I love how this turns out given that I was technically going cock-eyed staring at my own shoulders!

And this is probably my most favourite photo in the shoot. Because love is what binds us together. :) Can't wait for K to grow older, then we can have a proper family photo shoot!

Goodbye, Confinement

Hello! It has been a while since my confinement ended and to be honest, I missed it so much! If I have to summarise my confinement into things that I enjoyed most, it would be these:

#1. Food!

If you have been following my Instagram account (if you don't, please do!), you would have seen all these drool-worthy confinement dishes that my mother-in-law had whipped up. From the usual Stir-fried Pork with ginger to Salted Egg Yolk with Pork and butter to western Chicken Chop, I am surprised I haven't gained any weight from her wonderful cooking!

Maggie Mee with Threadfin Fish Slices

Pan-grilled Chicken Chop
#2. Descendants Of The Sun

I am one of those people that you know out there who watches Korean variety shows, listen to Korean music and I honestly learned all my random Korean words from these 'exposures' hahahahaha.

So apart from spending my time to watch Running Man, a memorable part of my confinement was spent on watching the highly-raved DOTS. And boy, I really enjoyed the drama, except for the last two episodes!

I thought Song Joong-Ki acted really well in this drama and the older he gets, the better he looks. When I first watched his shows about 5 years back, I merely thought he was a "flower boy" and didn't think too much about him.

I cannot wait for the second installment of DOTS, I hope they continue from the last episode and focus more on the Army and the medical aspects. I am not exactly keen on watching Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong-Ki's constant kissing scenes and cheesy love lines!

#3. Preparing Full Month Cakes

Not sure if I mentioned here or on my Dayre, but let me repeat again because as a mother of three, I have every right to be loh soh, LOL. For this pregnancy, I decided to DIY the full month cakes instead of catering because I get to choose what to put inside, choose the most delicious and best quality items and yet not pay an arm for it.

Nian was a bit reluctant to let me DIY actually, he thinks it is very time consuming and I should be resting at home during my confinement and not be busy over little things like that, which I can easily settle by catering from many different bakeries. That being said, I am glad that he gave in to me this time because I had so much fun!

I got my usual baker to make us these delicious rosette cakes in strawberry and vanilla flavours. I used to be a huge fan of chocolate cakes, but these days, I seem to have lost the liking for it. I find chocolate cakes too rich for my palate now so I prefer something lighter like strawberry and vanilla.

Then I made my own rather patchy red eggs. I have dyed so many red eggs since I do it for all three kids, I don't know why I can never get them to be even! I think I probably made the dye too watery? Need to have a #4 to find out. HAHA.

My MIL helped me order fresh ang ku kuehs from the market and they were really pretty good! I saved quite a bit of money, to be honest. Besides, my quantity wasn't huge so I wouldn't want to travel all the way to anywhere just to collect 15 boxes of cakes.

We could have just bought vouchers and then send them by post, but I thought if our families and friends can make the effort to come all the way down to see our baby, we should technically make the effort to thank them with cakes by going down personally too. What do you think?

Here's a close up of the gable boxes I got specially for the cakes, red egg and ang ku kueh.

#4. Preparing A Small Party

When the idea of having a party struck me in the middle of my confinement, I really wanted it to be a very small party, like having only 5 of my friends and probably 3 kids max but knowing me, one thing leads to another and we ended up having 7 adults (which isn't too bad), but our house was completely over-flooded with kids!

I have a love-hate relationship with parties when it comes to kids because I really like them to have fun, run around and play with all the toys we have... but I really hate it when it comes to cleaning up because there would be candy in my carpet, cake on the floor, toys strewn everywhere...

Anyway! Nothing a good cleaning wouldn't fix. I spent the remaining evening vacuuming up the entire house and thank goodness for a great vacuum cleaner, I didn't need to beat the carpets! Phew.

The star of the party has to be this gorgeous rosette cake that my baker made specially for K, free of charge! IT IS SO GORGEOUS IMMA DIE.

Inside was a 6-layer strawberry cake made in alternate pink tones... I swear this 8" cake weighs at least 3kg! I love it so much.

I also got some churros from Churros Factory. Their churros are still very good, but boy was I annoyed with their new web order system. I placed an order 2 days before the party and indicated a self-collection at one of their outlets between 2 to 3pm. When Nian got there, they had nothing prepared and said that they didn't receive any orders at all!

After giving them our order number and waiting for a couple of minutes, they finally retrieved our order and started on preparing them. Nian had to wait for a good 30 minutes for it. I mean.. what's the point of placing the orders in advance right? I could have just walked in and asked for 50 pieces of churros or something, since the gist of ordering in advance is so as to "take-and-go" to save some time.

I was so glad that I didn't arrange for a delivery because I would imagine nothing would come, since nobody saw our orders and nobody prepared them. It kinda marred the experience for me actually because by the time Nian rushed home, he was just in time for the party and we had to quickly display the food. Luckily we only had a small group of friends.

Anyway, it's over and everything was good! I am back to sending the kids to school, which they were pretty happy about it since they could show K off to their classmates, haha! I'm also back at work because there is no such thing as maternity leave when you run your own business lol.

Nevertheless, I am very happy and I take every day as a challenge now to deal with the gang of three. Most of the time it drives me crazy and I don't get to sit down for a minute unless they are in school, but I take it as a good chance to work out and lose my pregnancy weight HAHA. #optimism

When people look at me juggling with three kids (especially in the coffeeshop), they give me a look of pity. I don't know why????

It's not like I accidentally have three kids and I am suffering the wrath of it lol. We WANT to have our third child (in fact, we want to have 4 kids altogether so we have one more to go lol) and I am really enjoying myself even though it means that I would have to strap K onto me, carry A into her baby seat, prepare food for them, cut them into smaller pieces and made sure they eat well before I could tuck in myself.

Bedtime is also very hectic these days because K would be crying to be nursed, A would resist bedtime and D would be asking for his milk. But you know what? Everything just needs a system to fall into place. We are just one month into having a new addition to the family, so naturally things take time to work out. I would try different routine until I find one that works well for all of us and so far, I am still good!

So... I really wish people don't give me a pitiful look. They would tell me things like, "The ages of your kids are so close!" like it is a wrong decision made lol. I would smile and tell them that this was what we had intended it to be and we are so thankful that God gave them to us, all healthy, happy and rowdy. I wouldn't ask for anything to be different. Besides, newborn babies smell so good these people should give me an envious look instead because I can smell it whenever I want!

5 Good-To-Have Items To Welcome Motherhood

$
0
0
So! Your pregnancy test kit has just shown a double-line and your life has begun shopping for baby items!!

While there are many sites that would talk about the essential items you would need to buy (perhaps a cot? Diapers? Milk bottles?), today, I shall cover 5 absolutely non-essential, but definitely good to have items that would save your time and sanity. Ready? Let's go:

1. Swaddling Blankets

Tollyjoy Swaddling Blanket (Single Print with Velcro) - $17.90

If you stay with an elderly family member, they may tell you that a swaddling blanket is something "for fashion" and is completely redundant because a muslin cloth can do the same job at a cheaper price. Besides, "muslin cloth is more cooling!" they would say.

But what they didn't say is that you really need a good technique to swaddle a baby firmly, and you really need some safety pins to keep the swaddle in place. Which is a lot of trouble, really. Well, at least for me.

Not as easy as it looks! The cloth would come loose if the baby kicks. You could use a bigger cloth for better swaddling, but it increases the chances of SIDS.

As a mother of three, I really appreciate having swaddle blankets in my kids' early months because they are easy to use, all you need is common sense!

Besides, you don't need to deal with safety pins in the middle of the night (because you would need to swaddle the baby back, after changing his diapers, right?)... and it has velcro, which works superbly well in keeping the swaddle in place without having it come loose when the baby kicks.

Also, if you choose baby swaddling cloths that are 100% cotton, they are also very breathable and cooling.

2. Portable Drying Rack

Tollyjoy Portable Drying Rack - $7.90
A portable drying rack is an accessory which you can do without, but I love it in my household because I could overturn all my bottles to ensure that they are completely dry (because damp bottles stink, btw) before I keep it.

Apart from using it on baby's milk bottles, they are also good for the children's water bottles as well.

Daiso sells bottle drying racks too and I used to use them before I come across Tollyjoy's Portable Drying Rack. While it only costs $2, I find that the detachable sticks used to hold the bottle upright detaches really easily. Also, it only comes with only three such sticks so if you would need to buy more if you have many bottles.

The Tollyjoy Portable Drying Rack holds 8 bottles and two to three teats - good for 3 kids!

A portable bottle drying rack also means that it can be packed and be carried to wherever you need them. This could potentially be a life-saving item if you have three kids and all are still drinking from bottles! I cannot imagine how many bottles you would topple if you don't have these drying racks.

3. Disposable Nursing Pads

Tollyjoy Day & Night Nursing Pads - $7.90

When I was expecting Dylan, I had every mind to "go green" - I bought reusable breast pads because I thought it would not only be cost efficient, I can reduce waste! Oh boy I was wrong. My reusable breast pads had to be changed after every feed (i.e. like every 2 hours) and sometimes, it didn't even make past the 2-hour mark and I would be leaking out into my T-shirt.

Instead of saving money, I spent so much time washing and drying my breast pads! And most of the time they couldn't even dry fast enough for me. I had 4 pairs on rotation and yet I wipe out all 4 pairs by half a day.

If you have a pair of leaky boobs like me, then go for the disposable breast pads. I find that the disposable ones absorb milk better and keeps the nipples area dry too. Moist nips tend to encourage the growth of thrush, which is so itchy, you would probably wish it on your worst enemies lol.

The two brands that I use regularly are Tollyjoy's and Pigeon's. I find that these two are the most absorbent and don't leak.

4. Heat Sensitive Spoon

Tollyjoy heat sensitive spoon - $4.50
The heat sensitive spoon is a really useful item to have when your infant hits 6 months old and starts on her first solids (which is most likely porridge in the Asian setting). The pink portion turns white when it is in contact with hot food, so you won't need to test the porridge with your lips anymore!

I also like the small size of it - it fits well in my diaper bag to bring it out for meals, and it fits into the mouths of little kids like Alexis well, thus minimizing food dropping everywhere. It saves your sanity, in a way.

5. Baby Binder

They say you learn through every single pregnancy and as each child comes along - that is so true. I've never heard of the baby binder prior to having K, I thought it was a binder for mommies to get back their pre-pregnancy bodies!

While a swaddle blanket holds the baby's arms close to their bodies to prevent the startle effect, the baby binder protects the umbilical cord stump from rubbing against the diapers and from dropping off prematurely. It may seem like a redundant item to have, but I think it is pretty useful because K's umbilical stump often rubs against her diapers and sometimes it becomes slightly bloody!

It can be quite terrifying to see blood on your baby, yet you can't do anything about it because you can't wear her diapers lower (causes leaking), and neither can you wear it higher (will cause abrasion anyway).

Another use for the baby binder is to relief colic using applied pressure. It is able to comfort gassy stomachs, making baby feel more comfortable. It's definitely something I would consider using for my next baby.

How To Impress Everyone! (with TheSmartLocal)

$

Everyone knows that it is hard to impress everyone, but if there is one way I could share with you, is to look through TheSmartLocal and save some interesting reads that you like:

TheSmartLocal is founded in August 2012, which means that they are the same age as Dylan! In these four years, TheSmartLocal has written plenty of very useful articles that I personally really like, and I often refer to them to impress my friends and my husband! Here are three of my favourites to share with you.

#1. Places with free flow food

When it comes to free flow food, we will always think about buffets. But what about places where all you need is to order ONE MAIN dish, and then you get endless truffle fries or rice?

I also get a mild heart attack when I found some places where they serve free flow onsen eggs with ramen orders!

Imagine how smug I was when my friends go, "Wa how you know they serve free-flow stuff one???"

#2. 45 Places That You Can Charge Your Phone At

This is one of their latest posts and it is another useful one that I saved! I never knew I could borrow portable chargers at ION Orchard, which I found it most useful. Other shopping centers have charging stations, which is not as convenient because you have to hang around the station while your phone charges, but I still think it is great to know during times where you REALLY need juice in your cell.

There is also another interesting one - you can actually charge your phone at an exercise corner!!! Guess where?

Ok, the third one is not so much for impressing people, but I saved it because it is a good read during boring MRT rides and erm... when I am in the toilet:

#3. 9 Biggest Unsolved Crimes in Singapore History

Singapore is well-known for our low crime rate, yet we have a lot of gruesome crimes that had happened throughout the years. This post is a compilation of 9 biggest unsolved crimes that involves murder, attempted murder and kidnapping.

Some of them even involved guns, and yet they were never solved! Like this case in the picture, the lady, Cheng Li Zhen, was shot in broad daylight with a gun. Yet nobody knew who was the murderer. In fact, nobody knew it was a gunshot until she was sent to the hospital! What the hell?

She has never regained consciousness, and passed away shortly after in the hospital. Until now, no one knew exactly what had happened and why she was shot. Ew.

There are several interesting sites that I follow and read regularly, and TheSmartLocal is definitely one of them. I like how they have contributors to the site, kinda like a review database for people to share their opinions and things they found about Singapore - which makes it very local and very real!

If you haven't explored TheSmartLocal, go take a look at it. I am sure there will be some posts which will be useful for you.

4 Things That I Will Never Stop Buying

$

Following a post that I've written a month ago on 4 things that I've stopped buying, I thought I would share 4 things that I will NEVER stop buying, at least for the this year or two, I suppose?!

There are several reasons why I can never seem to resist these things, mostly because they are too pretty and irresistible.

Do you share the same "passion" as I do? :p

1. Craft items - stickers especially!

As I grow older, I actually grow to enjoy crafting. In the past, Art & Crafts is never my forte, but these days, I really don't mind doing a little bit of sewing, scrapbooking etc. AND I BUY SO MUCH STUFF to fuel my interests! These are just the tip of my ginormous mountain in the drawers!

2. Wet Bags

Some of my little stash. I've at least 10 wet bags and I am always smitten with more because they are really so useful, especially when we travel!

I have an insane love for wet bags because they come in so many pretty designs, are waterproof and doesn't spoil quickly. It's like an upgraded version of Ziplocs and I use them to store all sorts of things, from my Tula carriers to dry and wet clothes, swimming toys... so on and so forth.

3. Jujube Bags

I must admit that I am not as hardcore as compared to other jjb mothers, who have every different styles in different prints, but that is because I have very good self-control! *coughs*

I don't have that much love for their bigger bags, since I tend to use one for a while before I rotate and use others, a BFF and a Better Be is enough for me now. I am thinking of getting a HBB, but I'm not so sure? Still can't find enough reasons for me to buy one since my Better Be is pretty useful for short trips out too.

On the other hand, I love love LOVEEEE Be Quicks. I love how spacious it is such that I can stuff two phones, my huge wallet and my key pouch, a pack of tissue paper and wet wipes, and still zip it up to look nice and compact! I love it so much I had to have them in my favourite prints. Maybe the next one I would get is the PerkyToki print, but it is so expensive right now I think my heart would bleed if I accidentally stain it.

4. Hello Kitty Stuff

Gotta be honest here, I have TOO MUCH Hello Kitty stuff at home, but I really cannot stop buying them! I've got Hello Kitty bags, Hello Kitty decorations, Hello Kitty plushies, Hello Kitty mugs... and I've even got a Hello Kitty electric kettle. #truestory

I don't know about others, but having this little cat in my daily life makes everything sweeter, cuter and nicer!

So there you go, these are the four things that I'm always throwing my money to. What are some of the things you simply cannot resist? Share them with me!

RSAF Open House 2016

$

We live at the north of Singapore and very near a huge army base, so it is very often that the kids get to see chinooks and apaches trawling the skies every day. Dylan loves to see planes and he gets wildly excited when he spots one in the sky, so I thought bringing the three of them to the RSAF Open House would be a great idea since there would be many fighter jets and choppers on display!

The open house was from 10AM to 6PM, so I got the kids to have a full nap and we left home at 3PM, to arrive at Paya Lebar Air Base at about 4.30PM. The sun was less scorching and the weather was pretty windy, so it was a breeze to stroll about!

There were lots of static displays on the ground, from the F15 to F16 to the red-and-white Black Knights... Just look at how happy Dylan was posing with them. ^^

Apart from jets and choppers, there were also offensive weapons on display as well, along with the signal jeeps and everything else that is needed during emergencies.

Dylan as part of the crew!

Dylan in his No. 4 uniform, hahaha

We were stopping for a snack when somebody suddenly exclaimed, "Parachutes!" and all of us looked up. That was me trying to show Dylan the RSAF Parachutes Team jumping off from the plane and dropping down onto the ground. It was a short jump but it was so spectacular!

Talking about snacks, I thought the RSAF Open House was really very well arranged. There were plenty of drinks stalls around, and their prices were very reasonable. I was expecting to pay a hefty amount for drinks and snacks, but it turns out, each canned drink was only $1.50 and bottled water was $1 or so.

Apart from that, there were also a lot of food trucks with a variety of food for us to eat on the go. We went with Old Chang Kee, which was a no-brainer cuz I had to deal with three kids so I don't wanna spend too much time deciding what to eat, and smaller food items meant that we don't need to find somewhere to sit down so that I can feed them.

Personally, I really want to give thanks to the working personnels for the two days of the Open House. The weather was so sweltering hot, it was so crowded, yet all of them were friendly and approachable. Anyone of us could walk up to anyone on duty with any questions and all of them would be happy to assist.

They also had plenty of souvenirs which they gave away generously, much to the delight of many children (in terms of stickers and tattoos) and aunties (fans and pens!).

The Open House was supposed to close by 6pm, but many visitors queued for their chance to sit inside the static displays, many of us were still around even at 6.45pm. No one rushed us to get out; in fact, they were still enthusiastically giving us directions to the shuttle services.

Even when it comes to shuttle buses, there were plenty on rotation, so the waiting time was ZERO. I think all these efficiencies made me bringing 3 kids there very fuss-free. Of course, it wouldn't be as easy if I didn't have my good friend with me too.

Thanks for coming with us, Yo! This is the only picture I have of all of us.. and my hair is hopeless in this one. Hot weather = fringe all stuck to head. Sigh.

Can't wait for the next open house! Hopefully in the next couple of years (the last one was 5 yrs ago I heard!), by then, Dylan, Alexis and K would be old enough to be on board the chopper for a ride!

Red Bean Park Indoor Playground

$

Last week during our off-day, we brought our kids to a new indoor playground that we've just discovered! The Red Bean Park is located at 100AM mall, and it has an Angry Bird themed play area.

Red Bean Park started its operations on 1 May 2016, so it was less than a month old when we visited. Everything was spanking clean and new, and the slides were very slippery, much to Dylan and Alexis' delight.

There were two ball pools in the area, this smaller one for younger toddlers like Alexis, while the bigger one is for older children from 4 years old and up.

Dylan spent a good part of our visit there going on the slide over and over again lol.

This is the toddler play area. As compared to playgrounds like Hokey Pokey (when it was in Millenia Walk), this one certainly paled in comparison as they didn't have as many toys. However, I thought both Alexis and Dylan had a great time nevertheless and they were kept busy for a long time.

Building blocks with Papa

There were a lot of these little rides available throughout the playground and I thought it was really fun! Alexis loved it a lot and spent a lot of time in these little cars.

Obstacles set ups for 4 years old and above
A mini trampoline that exhausted Dylan's energy!
All in all, I think this is an intimate indoor playground that is great to visit during off-peak timings. The kids have enough space to roam about without me worrying about their safety, and the small area allows us to supervise them easily.

That being said, I don't think I will visit during peak hours because I feel that there won't be sufficient space to accommodate more than 20 or 30 kids. By then, I think it will be difficult for younger children like Alexis to play safely... given my experience with older kids in other indoor playgrounds.

Do note that there are also no diaper changing room for the younger ones. Even in the main building itself, we had trouble finding a place to change K.

What I thought was interesting was instead of having a cafe like Polliwogs, Red Bean Park has a separate area where waiting parents could do manicures and massages! I would certainly need that man.

Another interesting concept they have is that they have got kids' yoga and music classes as well during the weekends. I think the playground would have been a huuuuge motivational factor for the kids to go attend their classes!

Charges

Weekdays
Kids below 2: $10
Kids above 2: $20

Weekends
Kids below 2: $13
Kids above 2: $25

We were quite lucky to have scored the tickets from Groupon at 50% off, so we only paid $5 for Alexis and $10 for Dylan for unlimited play. We spent about 2.5 hours there before leaving for lunch. We would probably be back again if we can get another deal like this, otherwise for Dylan to pay $20 for a small play area, I would think it is a little expensive.

Afterall, Polliwogs is way bigger and it costs the same to visit too.

Tan's June Holiday Line-ups: Hi-5 at OneKM and more

$

It's June again and as my children grows older, the mid-year holidays get more and more significant! This year, I've packed many activities for them as we've got more free time on our hands from work. I've also included some programmes that you can bring your kids to, too!

First week of holidays - 31 May
Hi-5 appearance at OneKM

This holiday, Australian Hi-5 is at our sunny shores again! They've got three new members, and my favourite Stevie (yes, I kinda have my favourite Hi-5 member too, and I can sing most of their signature songs... that's what you get for being a mom lol) wasn't part of the group anymore, but their performance is still top-notch nevertheless.

Both Dylan and Alexis had such great time dancing to the upbeat music, although I must say, a 30-minute session is really too short for all of us!

Excited faces while waiting for the group to be out!

Yay! Here they are!
We went to the 5pm show on a Tuesday and it was relatively empty, so it was very enjoyable for all of us! You can spend $50 to get a Meet & Greet pass and also use the receipt to redeem 3 hours of complimentary parking. We ended up paying only $0.40!

Performance details:

Where: OneKM
Date: Until 12 June (no shows on 6 and 7 June)
Time: 2pm, 5pm and 7pm

Some other programme line-ups that I have planned for my kiddos that you can put into your calendars too!

Both Dylan and Alexis aren't fans of Barney, but I would be bringing them there anyway because it is going to be a musical performance and when there is music and dance, there would be Dylan and Alexis bouncing around.

The City Green outdoor park will be transformed into an urban beach, where there will be a variety of beach-themed activity stations, such as frisbee throwing, surf skills, sandcastle building and sitting in Bumper Boats. There is also a wondrous Spectacular Sandcastle that will be on display in front of the Mall, ready for photo-taking.

Performance Details:

Where: City Square Mall
Date: Until 19 June for Barney's performance; until 26 June for everything else
Time: 2pm and 7pm on Tues to Fri;
1pm, 4pm and 7pm on weekends

Both the husband and I really loved going to the Road Safety Park when we were in our Primary School because that is where we can drive in those miniature cars or ride those bicycles and learn about road safety.

I still remember I got some demerit points when I parked illegally along the road (instead of turning into the carpark!) while trying to get stamps from the marshals. Looks like my Fast and Furious days start young man.

This 17 June, to show appreciation to children who wrote in to Singa and the Kindness Cubbies, and to celebrate their efforts in spreading kindness, we have Kindsville Party specially for them. The public can also look forward to a meaningful family bonding time, with lessons on courtesy and road safety at $10 per pax. Children below 11 years old will get an event t-shirt too.

Registration ends today, so don't miss it!

Another exciting programme that is coming up in the Tan's household is the visit to Alive Museum again! Following our previous trip back in 2014, we are very excited to be back because they have just introduced new zones - Live.Laugh.Love and Young@Heart

I can't wait to write up a detailed post on this one because the generous folks from Alive Museum is sponsoring us a family package worth $90 to give away to one lucky winner! I think it will also be very funny to be posing with the art pieces. Dylan was especially good at posing with them, haha!

Details
Where: Alive Museum, Suntec City Tower 4
Date: From 27 May
Price:
Adult - $25
Child - $12 (between 3 to 12 years old)

There are more programmes that I have lined up for the children and ourselves, but in the meantime, I am going to leave you guys with this first. I'll be back with more in the next few weeks!

Imagine | Native at the S.E.A. Aquarium

$

Following a trip to OneKM last Tuesday for Hi-5, the clan trooped to Resorts World Sentosa on Sunday to bring the kids to see some fishes since we have a couple of complimentary tickets.

It was Dylan's second time to the Sea Aquarium, the first being part of his 1-year-old birthday celebration in 2013. Previously I mentioned that the aquarium was very crowded and pretty unconducive for younger children, I am happy to announce that three years on, the crowd has significantly eased up, so it wasn't such a nightmare to walk through the exhibits anymore.

There still isn't a nursing room though, so I was back at the secluded corner I found back in 2013, when I had to nurse Dylan, to nurse K. Well, at least there was somewhere for us to change Alexis' diapers!

Tiny people with giant mama (check K out hahaha)

It was the first time for Alexis and K to visit the Sea Aquarium, and I think Alexis is beginning to understand and appreciate where we are bringing her. In this case, she saw the waterfall at the back and she went, "WOW!" and proceeded to request a photo taken for her and her favourite boys.

Here's another one that fascinated them while we were on our way to the Sea Aquarium! We haven't been to the Trick Eye Museum though, perhaps next time we can arrange! *makes a mental note*

Taking a photo with the Maritime Museum exhibits

We entered the Aquarium at about 4.30pm, giving us sufficient time to stroll leisurely and to admire the corals, fishes, the giant sharks and stingrays. Alexis was awed by the sheer number of fishes that she saw and just like her brother, she sang the "fishes song" all through the aquarium!

The kiddos being very fascinated with the shipwreck exhibit

However, our key highlight for the visit was actually to go take a look at the Imagine | Native Fest For Kids. The Imagine | Native Fest is a book fair that features a lot of our local authors and their books. Apart from that, there are also performances, story-telling sessions, meet-the-authors, SEAA Babies, where children can colour mini handprint cards and stick them on the wall.

There are also touchpools, where children can touch starfishes and sea cucumbers as well!

Adult tickets are going at $6 if you buy it onsite, but at only $5 if you buy online. For the $5 entrance fees, you will get a $5 voucher which you can offset during your book purchases. Take note though, you would need to hit a minimum purchase of $30 before you can utilise the vouchers.

We didn't think we would purchase $30 worth of stuff, so we got the tickets at $3, without the free vouchers. Children from 4 to 12 will need to pay $3 each, but they would walk away with a goodies bag that had really pretty items above!

All in all, I think we had a great time at our second visit to the Sea Aquarium. It was a great eye-opener for Alexis, and the Imagine | Native Fest completed their trip with loads of crafts and story-telling, which really makes it memorable for them.

More on our holiday line-ups in the next few days! Told ya guys we really planned A LOT of things for the kids!

Budget Kitchen 1: Salted Egg Yolk Chicken

$
0
0
When people ask me about how we survive with three children and only one breadwinner for the family, I tell them that it's either I make sure my husband earns a lot of money, or try to limit additional expenses in the household.

One great way is to cook, instead of eating out.

Even though groceries in Singapore aren't exactly dirt cheap, it is still more economical as compared to eating out, especially when you dine in restaurants. It does help if you have a mom/mother-in-law as a great cook, because in my case, they keep me inspired to try out various new dishes every other time!

So I thought maybe I could start a little segment on budget kitchen to make a meal for the four of us (since K is still on 100% breastmilk), using less than $10 per meal. Imagine how much we would save in a week?

As all of you might have known, anything salted egg yolks now is in the rage. You can pair salted eggs with bread, it would fly off the shelves. You can pair it with pork ribs, tofu, chicken... anything. And it would taste damn good. Not sure what the ducks ate man.

So last week, I used my mother-in-law's recipe and tried to recreate the salted egg fried chicken she has made for me during my confinement and it turned out really well! So I thought I would share it with all of you because it is super simple, and it costs me less than $5. It would have cost me 12-bucks at the nearest tze char stall.

Ingredients:

* Chicken thighs, cubed
* Two salted eggs
* One egg
* Curry leaves
* Butter
* Garlic, chopped
* Tapioca flour
* Oyster sauce
* Sesame Oil
* Pepper

Steps:

1. Marinate the chicken with oyster sauce, sesame oil, pepper and egg

2. Coat the chicken cubes with tapioca flour

3. Using sufficient oil, deep fry until golden brown and set aside.

4. Boil the salted eggs until they are hard boiled, then discard the egg whites and keep only the egg yolk. Mash the egg yolk up.

5. Clean the pan and melt some butter. Throw in some chopped garlic and curry leaves, fry until golden (the garlic, not the leaves lol). Throw in the mashed salted eggs and fry until the sauce thickens.

6. Throw the fried chicken cubes in to make sure that they are fully coated with the salted egg sauce, remove from heat and serve hot.

You can get this done in probably 20 minutes!

Cost breakdown:

* Chicken thighs, cubed - $2.50
* Two salted eggs - $0.30
* One egg - $0.15
* Curry leaves - $0.60 for a huge bunch

Total cost: $3.55

Share with me your Budget Kitchen and we could link each other up!

Barney Beach Party At City Square Mall

$
0
0

The thing about being parents to young children is that... you really go around shopping centres chasing childhood idols. *laughs*

In the past, I would be chasing Jay Chou, going to his concerts and all.. and now, I am part of the mama gang who would bring their kids to their favourite Hi-5 and Barney. Just a week ago when I blogged, I didn't think Dylan and Alexis were fans of Barney? I mean.. they never spoke to me about Barney and they never asked me for any Barney merchandises.

Yet when we went to City Square Mall for the Barney Beach Party Performance, oh my god, they were sooooo into it, I was so amused watching Dylan singing along with the purple dinosaur!

A small tip though, if you are going for the 7pm show like us, be there early to get a seat! Even though we were there on a Tuesday evening, the atrium was completely filled even before 7pm. Looks like there are a lot of Barney fans out there.

The show lasts about 20 minutes and afterwhich would be the meet-and-greet session. There will be 50 passes to be redeemed an hour before the show, all you need to do is to spend $50 at City Square Mall.

Another tip, the meet-and-greet, even though there are 50 people in the queue, it gets over and done with really quickly. We waited for a mere 5 to 10 minutes at most? Thinking that it was going to take a while, Nian brought Dylan and Alexis outside the City Green to play and they couldn't rush back in time for a picture with their idol. (Hence it is just K and I!)

The Barney Beach Party live show is on from now until 19 June. Tuesdays to Fridays are at 2pm and 7pm while weekends are at 1pm, 4pm and 7pm.

Summer Splash Carnival

Talking about the City Green, the entire area is converted to a beach by a shopping center! You would be greeted by this huge sand structure, along with many different beach games available for play.

Sand pit for the children to indulge in - bring your gears!

In short, the Summer Splash Carnival is a beach brought to the city. We brought the kids early, before the Barney singalong session, to take a look at it and also to check out the prices of these activities.

Inflatable rock climbing, 3 tickets for 5 minutes, minimum height of 1m is required

Tickets are available for sale right outside the Level 1 entrance of City Square Mall and are going for $2 per ticket, or $10 for 6 tickets (buy 5 get 1 free). Generally, each station requires about 2 to 3 tickets per child, which works out to about $4 to $6 per activity.

Surfing
Certain activities, like the Surf Board, requires minimum height requirement so it is not suitable for younger children.

Beach Bowling

Bum Boats
With the 6 tickets provided by City Square Mall, both Dylan and Alexis only managed to try out the bum boats as they cost 3 tickets each for a 5-minute ride. Personally, I would think that this is rather pricey as it works out to $6 for 5 minutes!

To experience all the stations, you would probably need about 15 tickets? That would mean setting aside about $25 per child.

Alexis enjoying her ride and promptly missed her photoshoot session with Barney, haha
The Splash Carnival is from now until 26 June, 1pm to 10pm daily. Tickets are required to play.

Other fun stuff

Choo-choo trains!
Apart from the Summer Splash Party at City Square Mall, the kiddos can also immerse themselves in other fun rides such as these colourful trains that go round the City Green; ZooMoov or simply just enjoy the eco-playground there.

Having a fun game of see-saw!

Personally, I think the playground at City Square Mall supercedes a lot of other playgrounds we have been to at other shopping centers. Granted that it is outdoors and therefore play can be affected by weather, I like how spacious the playground is and they are filled with our olden play stations, albeit with a modern twist!

You can expect swings, which I really don't see much of it anymore everywhere else. And not only that, the swings come with a safety barrier so that the kids don't come flying out when they play. There is also a merry-go-round that made Nian and I very giddy, much to the delight of the kids. And of course, slides are a must, and the see-saw simply completes the playground that we all love.

I wouldn't let my kids miss the playground if the weather permits.

In addition, you may want to explore the two resident indoor playgrounds - Petite Park and Fun N Laughter too.

The train rides are at $6, eco-playground is free of charge.

New Stores

Another of our objective to visit City Square Mall is also to check out some of their latest stores:

Decathlon Singapore opens new outlet!
If you are a sports person, whether you're into yoga or soccer, or netball or basketball, the name Decathlon would probably set your heart fluttering. Decathlon is well-known for carrying all sorts of sporting gears, from camping to fishing to racket sports to balls... they carry gears for over 70 different types of activities!

Most importantly, their prices are very friendly. You can expect to pay less than $20 for work-out clothes, which is pretty good deal.

We also had our dinner at the newly opened Din Tai Fung at City Square Mall. The food is very good as usual, but do note that they no longer serve tea in individual glasses. Instead, you would be required to order your own pot of tea. Other than that, we are still pretty much impressed by the service quality and the standard of the food served at DTF.

Beach Survival Set For Grabs

If you spend $200 at City Square Mall, you can use your receipts to redeem the Beach Survival Set that consists of a foldable mat with an inflatable pillow and a really huge cooler bag that can store 12 cans of drinks. I thought this would be really useful for our next picnic outing too, not necessarily for the beach. You'd only need to spend $180 if you use DBS/POSB credit/debit card. (not inclusive of supermarket receipts)

Also, you can use the same receipts to redeem a $5 City Square Mall voucher if you use NETS/Debit Card payment.

So this holidays, if you haven't planned to go anywhere with your kids, City Square Mall would be a nice place to spend a day.

{Disclosure: Our family has been provided with Barney's meet-and-greet passes, along with tickets for Summer Splash Carnival and beach survival sets for the purpose of this review.}

[GIVEAWAY!] Tollyjoy's New Pull-Up Pants

$
0
0
How early did your baby start to walk?

My son started walking by 12 months, and my daughter at 16 months. However, regardless of WHEN a child starts walking, one thing that's common is that diaper changing suddenly becomes super challenging!

When the babies were young, it used to be a race against time. Will it be me completing the diaper changing sequence faster, or will I be treated to a bout of golden shower?

But like I said, when the kids grow up, changing diapers became another set of challenge because they just wouldn't lie still to let you wear those diapers anymore!
And so, pull-up pants became my best friend. I love pull-up pants mainly because they are easy to wear and the correct brands are often very comfortable for the children too.

When Tollyjoy offered me a pack of their pull-up pants, I was actually pretty surprised because I never knew Tollyjoy carries diapers? So I was pretty curious to see how well they are made.

Highly Stretchable Sides

The first thing I usually try on pull-up pants is to see how stretchable they are. I would hold them up and give them a huge tug to see if they rip easily too.

Thankfully, Tollyjoy's pull-up pants are very highly stretchable around the waist and groin area. The materials are also pretty soft, so it definitely won't bite into our baby's skin, especially if our kiddos have huge chunky thighs.

Absorbency

While it is convenient, pull-up pants are generally less absorbent as compared to regular diapers. How I usually test a diaper's absorbency is to let my kiddos wear them overnight. Yes, even when it is pull-up pants, the same length of time gives me a rather fair comparison based on their absorbency.

Surprisingly, Tollyjoy's pull-up pants can actually endure Alexis' flipping, flopping and peeing throughout the night without any leakages at all. Tollyjoy attributes it to the diaper's special side 3D leakguards that gives an added leakage control. Our usual brand works well too, but I am actually a little concerned as the diaper pants tend to bunch up at their backsides when they sleep through the night.

Fit

Talking about bunching, as you can see, Tollyjoy's pull-up pants fit very well on our little girl. It is secure, yet isn't too tight. Even though she is very prone to diaper rashes, the extra dry Acquisition Distribution Layer (ADL) at the top layer made sure she is always kept dry.

Prices and Availability

The Tollyjoy diaper pull-up pants are sold at $9.90 per pack for all sizes and are available in 3 different sizes –

‘M’ for 7-10kg babies,
‘L’ for 9-13kg babies
‘XL’ for 13-17kg babies

It is currently available at Big Box Hypermart (Jurong East), Mustafa Shopping Centre and online stores including Qoo10, Redmart and Sosoon.

Giveaway!

Of course, nothing beats trying the product for yourself. With compliments from Tollyjoy, I have 10 packs of Tollyjoy Diaper Pull Up Pants up for grabs! There will altogether be 5 winners and each of you will receive two packs of diaper pants worth $20.

Starting The School Term with POPULAR

When it comes to books and stationary, POPULAR book store will almost be the first shop that comes to our mind. Now with POPULAR Online, shopping for books is so much easier because everything is laid out nicely for you to scroll through!

What I Liked

1. Wide variety of English books
There are over 3.5 million English titles for you to choose from and for this GSS, over 800 titles are on 50% off, exclusively on POPULAR Online only

Take note though, while there are language books like Japanese dictionaries, Easy German etc, you will not be able to find story books in Mandarin, Malay or Tamil. For those, you would still need to go down to POPULAR stores.

2. Storewide 20% sale with no promo codes required
There are loads of discounts going on on POPULAR Online. Between now to 3 July, you get 20% storewide discount regardless of the books you purchase (except promotional or nett priced items). This is on top of the already discounted price so it was a really great deal.

Bought these books for the children - Dylan is learning to read at the moment so I have been buying him so many first readers! The usual price is $5, but I got them at only $3.80 each after the 20% discount I enjoy.

You also get to enjoy an additional 5% off if you purchase more than $100 worth of books!

3. Opt for self-collection or delivery

The delivery fee is a mere $5, I believe it doesn't matter how many books you purchase, it is at a flat fee. If you have a POPULAR bookstore near to you, you can opt to self-collect at their stores to save yourself the delivery fees too.

I guess the only con here is that it takes up to 18 days for your orders to be fulfilled, so if you are looking at some last-minute adhoc purchase, you will still have to visit their stores to get them.

Finding Dory Premium Giveaway Lucky Draw

There are 10 sets of Finding Dory premiums to be given away (1 Adult Tee, 1 Child Tee and 1 poster) to lucky people who purchase any Finding Dory books.

Also on from now until 3 July 2016, POPULAR is holding a Titbits and Stationery extravaganza at Suntec Convention Level 3 Concourse. Shoppers will get to enjoy up to 70% off an extensive range of Stationery, Organic, Healthy and Imported Titbits with other great bargains like the “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” Deal and the “$10 Bundle” Deal.

There are also other fun and enriching workshops, from ice-cream to eco rubber clay making, will also be available at the carnival.

Only less than a week more to go, don't miss these great deals from POPULAR. :)

We Went To Robot Kitty Exhibition 2016!

16th of June was a super fantastic day for me because the husband surprised me with two tickets to the Robot Kitty Exhibition at Suntec City! Despite being a fan of this mouthless kitty, I had no intention of visiting the exhibition because I thought the entire experience was very expensive.

It costs $28 each for the both of us and that was only inclusive of a standard ticket that allowed you to go in and play everything ONCE. The standard ticket also didn't allow you to accumulate any points, which was actually the whole point of the entire exhibition because the points would allow you to get accessories for your Robots.

If you want to get your robots, you need to pay $38 for each of them.

The Black Kitty is the limited edition one that is only available on-site

So all in all, it will cost $66 to go in with a Robot Kitty!

Talking about the accessories, the game mechanism is that we would have to use our kitties at the various game stations to accumulate points. Different point system will allow you to redeem different levels of accessories.

The accessories were split into Levels 1, 2 and 3. The 3 being the hardest to get, but the nicest to have, like the gold and rose gold wings and helmets!!

Generally, you can get items from Levels 1 rather easily - it gives you a leeway of failing at any one of the stations, but if you fail more than one, then you would most likely walk away without being able to have enough points to earn yourself an accessory.

Level 2 requires you to have a perfect score to hit enough points.

As for Level 3, you would definitely need to reload your Robot Kitty to go for an additional round.. and that is another $16!!

When we were in there, we overheard a lady telling the people working there that it was her 8th reload - that is already $128? And the catch is that you will have to reload it on the same day. You can't leave, and then come back the next day to continue the game.

And what made it even more unpalatable was that you cannot choose the accessories you would like to have. Yes, despite spending so much money, multiple reloads etc., whatever you end up with is entirely random and if your luck fails, you would probably end up with multiples of the same thing!

So we decided to make our money worth and we walked everywhere to take pictures of the kitties in display.

Briefing prior to entry
Getting our Robots activated for game play

Each visitor would have to carry this landyard whenever we are inside. And if you decide to lose it/bring it home, you will get fined when you don't return it to them lol.

Alexis, being my daughter, has a penchant for Hello Kitty too, so it was really one stone killing two of us birds bringing us there!

Nian working really hard at one of the games

Alexis feeling really sad for kitty. She thinks that kitty fell and hurt herself, so she is there making sure Kitty's fine lol
Kitty hospital!

This is the machine that would tell you how many points you've gotten in your Robot Kitty so that you can use it to redeem your accessories

This was the last of the 5 stations we were at, it is a sure win stage and you have to complete all other 4 stations before you can attempt this one. After you attempt this, you would have to leave the play area and head on towards the redemption booth, where you can go on the tikam machine to hopefully redeem something you like!

We eventually redeemed one Level 1 and one Level 2 item, but they were both roughly the same thing - drills! I was hoping to score the silver helmet or wings from Level 2, but since this is entirely computerised, the chances of getting it is probably very low. Ah well, it was a great experience nevertheless!

P.S. If you are looking for these accessories, there are loads of people selling them on Carousell. The prices are kinda expensive though, but it may go down over time. You will just need to keep a look-out!

[GIVEAWAY!] Family Outing to Alive Museum

Roughly a fortnight ago, Nian and I brought the kids to Alive Museum for a fun and short trip because I was told that they've got new zones - the Young@Heart and Live.Laugh.Love zone up recently so we were pretty excited to see what's it all about.

When we first stepped in, it was a sense of familiarity because we visited Alive Museum when it first opened back in 2014, yet when we entered, we were pleasantly surprised because the very first display was something different already!

Check out my three lions roaring in the first exhibit.

With Dylan much older now than he was when we visited previously, he could help himself to posing in a lot of different exhibits and with our experience, I knew where to stand (look out for the prompts on the floor!) to capture the best view.

If I can offer only one tip to visitors, it will be to visit Alive Museum on weekdays. The place is generally less crowded and that means you can take more time to pose and adjust until you get the best angle!

When we went on a Tuesday afternoon, there were only us and another family! So you can imagine how much fun we all had, taking time to pose at each shot without getting hurried along.

Here is the live.laugh.love section!! It would actually be more appropriate had it been Nian and I posing on these... but too bad the little ones are not trained as a photographer yet lol. We also tried putting Dylan and Alexis together to pose, but they refused to cooperate!?

That's K and I on the wedding car woohoo!

Here are another couple of new exhibits that we saw while spending our afternoon at Alive Museum. Loads of bicycles everywhere so if your kids love them, they would have a splendid time fighting over it, haha!

Please please please make sure that you have an adult beside to ensure safety! We were right beside her when the photos were taken, I just cropped us out so you don't see us!

Then we explored the old-timers:

Dylan in 2014

Dy and Alexis now!
When we first visited Alive Museum (also around the same June/July period), I was still heavily pregnant with Alexis! Look at her now :)

I can never resist getting them to pose with the alligator. This is one of my favourites!

Dylan then and now. I realised he is still wearing the same pair of shoes after 2 years!

Another picture that Dylan posed with back then and now.

And that's papa and him saving the little penguins!!

Summary

All in all, Alive Museum is a great place to check out as it is suitable for both the young and the old. You would typically spend about 1.5 hours to 2 hours inside, depending on the crowd density for the day. Do try to go on an off-peak timing so that you get more time and space to explore and to take funny pictures!

Have you heard of EatBook.sg?

When it comes to eating out, my husband forever likes to ask me one question:

"Go where, eat what?"

Some days, I would have splendid answers for him.. but most days, I would tell him, "Wa lao why I think again!"

Personally, I feel that the hardest thing in eating out is to actually decide where to go and what to eat. Once you get that settled, the travelling is pretty straight forward!

I have a few sites that I always repeatedly go back to when my husband asks me the golden question and these few weeks, I've also added EatBook.sg into my reference list.

OMG AREA GUIDE

Personally, my favourite tab from the website is the Area Guide because I can choose a place near to where we are going and then explore the area!

For example, sometimes we run our errands in Hougang, and since we are hardly there, we really don't know what is nice? So that's when I go into EatBook.sg, click on Area Guide and ta-daaaaaa:

There we go. 12 eateries in Kovan and Hougang to let me choose from and propose to my hubby!

We actually went to Soon Soon Teochew Porridge after reading the post for a quick lunch, since I am really a sucker for Teochew Muay. Ooooh otak-otak and chilli minced pork were my absolute favourites there, but it is a little bit on the pricey side though, to be honest.

You can also use their Food Guide, where they have a compilation of a particular dish, or places with a particular theme.

Their 11 Kid-Friendly Restaurants are in my bookmarks list so that I can quickly scroll through to see if we are close enough to whichever, so that we can grab some good food with the kids.

If you are Bak Kut Teh, Bak Chor Mee, Wonton Mee or even Churros lovers, you will find a neat compilation of the best of each in their respective posts, all ready for you to check them out one-by-one.

New Updates + Easy Navigation

One thing I look out for in my foodie websites is that they must be constantly updated. If there are any cool cafes, yes! I wanna know! If there are any nice restaurants that they have just found, yup I wanna go try too.

At EatBook.sg, I can find the updates easily at their main page. But if I'm specifically looking for cafes or restaurants, I can also use the tabs to find what I want easily too.

So... don't say I didn't share ok? Next time when you are stuck and have no idea where to go, perhaps you might want to take a look at EatBook.sg for more inspirations!
